The Art & Science of Being Human: Why I’m Here

A lone figure gazes toward a heart shaped cloud against a dramatic blue sky.

After nearly 30 years working as a psychotherapist, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: the more I learn about being human, the more I realize how much there is left to discover.

I’ve spent much of my professional life exploring the connections between our thoughts, emotions, bodies, and relationships, both with ourselves and with one another. Along the way, I’ve also worked in pharmaceutical research, played and written music, and had plenty of experiences that challenged what I thought I understood.

What fascinates me most is how interconnected it all is, and how interconnected we all are.

Our nervous systems influence what we notice, how we feel, the stories we tell ourselves, and the ways we connect with others. Yet so much of this happens outside our conscious awareness.

This blog is a place to explore those connections.

Sometimes we’ll look at the neuroscience behind everyday experiences. Sometimes we’ll examine the psychology of relationships, stress, happiness, creativity, and change. And sometimes we’ll simply follow an interesting question to see where it leads.

I’ve come to realize that each answer will likely lead to even more questions. Over the years, I’ve learned to embrace this as a good thing. Some of the most meaningful discoveries begin when we’re willing to question what we think we know, sit with uncertainty, and recognize that seemingly contradictory truths can coexist.

My hope is that you’ll find something here that helps you better understand yourself, others, and the world around you. Maybe you’ll even come to appreciate someone who challenges you, or find yourself looking at the world a little differently.

And hopefully, we’ll have some fun along the way.

If you enjoy learning and are open to sitting with the tension of the present moment, I believe you’ll find something of value in these reflections.

I hope this message finds you and yours well, and I look forward to wherever our paths may lead.

Thanks for being here with me.
